Nikolaus Awtrey

Nikolaus Awtrey is a visiting researcher at Beckstein Lab and a recent Arizona State University graduate. He received his B.S. in Physics from ASU in May of 2020 and previously joined the lab in June of 2019, where he participated in the Summer 2019 NSF REU program. His work at Beckstein Lab as an REU student focused on developing new analysis classes for Parallel MDAnalysis (PMDA), the parallel computation variant of MDAnalysis. During the program he contributed two analysis classes, DensityAnalysis and RMSF, which calculate solvent densities and root mean square fluctuations, respectively.

In August of 2019, Nik continued working in the lab as an undergraduate researcher and later (post-graduation) as a visiting researcher. His current project, Kinetic Diagram Analysis, focuses on using biochemical kinetic diagrams to calculate steady-state observables.

Nik has held several positions within the ASU physics department. First as a Lecture Assistant for undergraduate physics courses, then as a Student Worker for the Physics Instructional Resource Team (PIRT), and lastly as a Teaching Assistant under Dr. Robert Ros.

Outside of his work he has hobbies that include rebuilding/restoring older 90’s era Subaru’s, playing guitar, and hiking. He can be found on GitHub (nawtrey), Twitter (@AwtreyNikolaus), and LinkedIn (nawtrey).
